Calcaneal sulcus

Sulcus calcanei

Definition

Calcaneal sulcus (a.k.a. sulcus calcanei) is a deep bony groove found on the superior surface of the calcaneus bone. It runs anterolaterally on the superior surface of calcaneus bone, separating the middle and anterior talar articular surfaces from the posterior talar articular surface.

The calcaneal sulcus on the superior surface of the calcaneus bone combines with the tarsal sulcus (or sulcus tali) on the inferior surface of the talus bone to create a bony channel called the tarsal sinus. The interosseus calcaneal ligament, attached to the upper surface of the calcaneus bone, is situated within the tarsal sinus.
