Carotid triangle

Trigonum caroticum

  • Latin synonym: Fossa carotica

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The carotid triangle is a paired anatomical region of the neck, defined by specific boundaries: it is bounded superiorly by the posterior belly of the digastric muscle, laterally by the medial border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, and inferiorly by the superior belly of the omohyoid muscle.

Within this triangle lie critical vascular and neural structures, most notably the bifurcation of the common carotid artery into the internal and external carotid arteries, as well as branches of the external carotid artery and portions of the internal jugular vein and cranial nerves.
