Central intermediate substance

Substantia intermedia centralis

Definition

The central intermediate substance comprises of the gray matter that surrounds the central canal of spinal cord and corresponds with the Rexed lamina X. It can be divided into dorsal and ventral commissures, behind and in front of the central canal, respectively. These commissures interconnect the gray matter of the right and left spinal halves with each other.

The central intermediate substance continues laterally as the lateral intermediate substance (a.k.a. base of posterior horn or lamina VII), which comes to lie between the posterior and anterior horns of the spinal gray matter Together, the central and lateral intermediate substances constitute the intermediate zone of spinal cord.
