Cerebellar fossa

Fossa cerebellaris

  • Latin synonym: Fossa occipitalis cerebellaris

Definition

There are two concave bony spaces located on each side of the internal occipital crest, known as the cerebellar fossae. These spaces accommodate the cerebellar hemispheres. The upper edge of both cerebellar fossae is highlighted by the grooves for the transverse venous sinuses. This is also the spot where the tentorium cerebelli attaches, creating a separation between the cerebellum and brainstem from the occipital cortex above.
