Lambdoidal border of occipital bone
Margo lambdoideus ossis occipitalis
- Synonym: Lambdoid border of occipital bone
- Related terms: Lambdoid border
Definition
The lambdoidal border of occipital bone is the jagged edge where this bone meets the two parietal bones at the front, creating a suture known as the coronal suture. This suture extends from one side to the other, lying in a transverse or side-to-side plane. The middle point of the coronal suture, where it intersects with the midline sagittal suture, is called the lambda. The lambda indicates the location of the posterior fontanelle in newborns, which ossifies at a later age.
