Dorsal venous arch of foot

Arcus venosus dorsalis pedis

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The dorsal venous arch of the foot is a prominent superficial venous structure located on the dorsum of the foot. It is formed by the convergence of the dorsal metatarsal veins, which drain blood from the toes and metatarsal regions. The arch runs transversely across the dorsum, typically at the level of the bases of the metatarsal bones. Medially, it continues as the medial marginal vein, which drains into the great saphenous vein, and laterally as the lateral marginal vein, which drains into the small saphenous vein. The arch receives tributaries from the dorsal digital veins and communicates with the deep venous system via perforating veins.
