Dorsal metatarsal veins

Venae metatarseae dorsales

  • Latin synonym: Venae metatarsales dorsales

Definition

IMAIOS

The dorsal metatarsal veins run in the intermetatarsal spaces on the dorsum of the foot, drain the dorsal digital veins, and empty into the dorsal venous arch, which then connects to the marginal veins and the major superficial veins of the lower limb.

The dorsal metatarsal veins are located superficial to the extensor tendons and are closely associated with the cutaneous nerves of the dorsum of the foot. Their course is variable but generally parallels the corresponding arteries, with segmental branches connecting to the deep venous system via perforating veins.
