Dorsal digital veins of foot

Venae digitales dorsales pedis

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The dorsal digital veins of the foot are part of the superficial venous system and are responsible for draining blood from the dorsal aspect of the toes. These veins originate on the dorsal surfaces of the toes and run proximally along the sides of each digit. They converge to form the dorsal venous network (dorsal venous arch) on the dorsum of the foot. The dorsal digital veins communicate with the dorsal metatarsal veins, which then drain into the dorsal venous arch. The arch itself is a key structure, receiving blood from both the medial and lateral aspects of the foot and providing outflow to the great saphenous vein medially and the small saphenous vein laterally.

The dorsal digital veins are located superficially, between the skin and the deep fascia, and are accompanied by small cutaneous nerves. They are interconnected by transverse communicating branches, which facilitate collateral flow.
