Geniohyoid branch of hypoglossal nerve

Ramus geniohyoideus nervi hypoglossi

  • Synonym: Nerve to geniohyoid muscle

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The geniohyoid branch of the hypoglossal nerve is a specific motor branch that innervates the geniohyoid muscle.

The hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) is primarily responsible for motor innervation to the muscles of the tongue, but it also provides branches to other muscles in the neck region, including the geniohyoid muscle.

The geniohyoid branch arises from the hypoglossal nerve on the hyoglossus muscle and is part of the complex branching pattern of the hypoglossal nerve, which also includes branches to the thyrohyoid muscle and the superior root of the ansa cervicalis.
