Interphalangeal joint of great toe

Articulatio interphalangea hallucis

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The interphalangeal joint of the great toe is a hinge-type synovial joint formed between the head of the proximal phalanx and the base of the distal phalanx of the hallux. The joint is stabilized by a robust joint capsule, medial and lateral collateral ligaments, and a thick plantar plate.

The flexor hallucis longus tendon passes plantar to the joint, separated from the joint capsule by a bursa when an ossicle (os interphalangeus) is present; in the absence of this ossicle, the tendon is adherent to the capsule.
