Medial collateral ligament complex of the elbow
Complexus ligamentaris collateralis medialis cubiti
- Synonym: Ulnar collateral ligament complex of the elbow
- Acronym: MCL/UCL
Definition
The medial collateral ligament complex of the elbow is composed by three bundles:
Anterior bundle of the medial collateral ligament (A-MCL): arises from the inferior margin of the medial epicondyle and inserts at the sublime tubercle of the ulnar coronoid process
Posterior bundle of the medial collateral ligament (P-MCL): originates at the posterior aspect of the medial epicondyle of the humerus and attaches to the medial aspect of the olecranon process
Transverse ligament (T-MCL): originates on the proximal medial olecranon and runs distally to insert just distal to the coronoid process
The medial collateral ligament complex is also called “ulnar collateral ligament complex”, and is analogous to the “Ulnar collateral ligament of elbow (Ligamentum collaterale ulnare cubiti)” of the Terminologia Anatomica
