Meniscofemoral ligament

Ligamentum meniscofemorale

  • Synonym: Meniscofemoral ligament portion of deep medial collateral ligament

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The medial meniscofemoral ligament is a distinct, dense connective tissue structure that originates from the medial aspect of the medial femoral condyle and inserts onto the superior edge of the medial meniscus. It corresponds at the upper portion of the of deep medial collateral ligament.

Note that the term "meniscofemoral ligament" may be confusing:

  • The term "meniscofemoral ligament" corresponds to the medial meniscofemoral ligament (upper portion of the of deep medial collateral ligament) because no "lateral meniscofemoral ligament" (that would connect the lateral meniscus to the lateral surface of lateral femoral condyle) is described in litterature.

  • The term "meniscofemoral ligament"may be confused with the posterior meniscofemoral ligament (Wrisberg) and the anterior meniscofemoral ligament (Humphrey), that are both located centrally in the knee joint.
