Opercular part of inferior frontal gyrus
Pars opercularis gyri frontalis inferioris
- Related terms: Opercular part
Definition
The opercular part of inferior frontal gyrus is a specific area in the inferior frontal gyrus that is situated behind the ascending ramus of the lateral sulcus.
To explain in more detail, the cortical operculum positioned behind the ascending ramus of the lateral sulcus is referred to as the frontoparietal operculum. It plays a role in forming the upper lip of the lateral sulcus, which covers the insular cortex. The fronto-parietal operculum consists of two sub-parts: the frontal and the parietal. The frontal component, known as the opercular part of inferior frontal gyrus, is formed by the inferior frontal gyrus itself.
The anterior section of the opercular part of inferior frontal gyrus contributes to the Broca's motor speech area. Immediately behind it lies the lower part of the precentral gyrus, which contains the primary motor control regions for the muscles of the face, head, and neck.
