Palatine torus
Torus palatinus
Definition
A palatine torus (or torus palatinus) is a bony growth that can be found on the hard palate, and it's present in approximately 20% to 30% of the general population. These growths, varying in size and number, are benign and usually don't cause pain. Unless they interfere with speech, swallowing, or other functions, treatment for palatine torus is usually not necessary. This condition can either be present at birth or develop later in life.
Similar bony growths, known as mandibular tori or torus mandibularis, can also be found under the tongue, on the floor of the mouth, specifically on the lower jaw (mandible).
