Definition
The inferior interventricular artery (posterior interventricular artery) courses within the posterior interventricular sulcus on the diaphragmatic (inferior) surface of the heart. This artery most commonly arises from the right coronary artery (RCA) in the majority of individuals, a pattern referred to as right coronary dominance. In cases of left dominance, it may originate from the left circumflex artery.
The inferior interventricular artery supplies the posterior third of the interventricular septum and adjacent portions of both ventricles, and gives off posterior septal perforator branches that penetrate the septum to supply the conduction system and septal myocardium.
This artery is termed as right posterior descending coronary artery (Right PDA; RD; Segment 04; R4) in coronary angiography.
