Posterior lacrimal crest
Crista lacrimalis posterior
Definition
The posterior lacrimal crest is a vertical bony ridge identified on the lateral or orbital surface of the lacrimal bone. It marks the posterior edge of the lacrimal groove (a.k.a. the lacrimal fossa), an important area that accommodates the lacrimal sac within. Furthermore, the space just behind this crest gives the orbicularis oculi muscle—specifically its lacrimal part—a place to attach. These two points underline the importance of the posterior lacrimal crest in controlling facial expressions and the movement of tears.
