Preoccipital notch
Incisura preoccipitalis
- Latin synonym: Incisura praeoccipitalis
- Related terms: Pre-occipital notch
Definition
The preoccipital notch is a small visible indentation situated along the inferolateral border of the cerebral hemisphere, approximately 5 cm in front of the occipital pole.
When observing the superolateral surface of the brain, if we draw an imaginary line connecting the parietooccipital sulcus to the preoccipital notch along the inferolateral border of cerebral hemisphere, we can create a hypothetical dividing line. This line separates the cerebral region in front of it from the occipital lobe, which is located behind it.
