Definition

Antoine Micheau

The sternocostal triangles (foramina of Morgagni; sternocostal hiatus; Larrey's triangle) are paired right and left small zones lying that form openings between the costal and sternal attachments of the thoracic diaphragm. Important vessels pass through these bilateral foramina including the superior epigastric arteries as terminations of the internal thoracic arteries, with accompanying veins and lymphatics.

Each right and left sternocostal triangle is bordered by the sternum anteriorly, the costal cartilages laterally, and the muscular fibers of the diaphragm posteriorly.
