A subcutaneous bursa is a synovial-lined, fluid-filled sac located between the skin and underlying bony prominences. Its main function is to reduce friction and facilitate smooth movement of the skin over bone during motion or pressure.

These bursae are usually found in areas subjected to repeated movement or pressure, where the skin is prone to shear stress.
