Submuscular bursa

Bursa submuscularis

  • Latin synonym: Bursa synovialis submuscularis

Definition

Muhammad A. Javaid

A submuscular bursa is a synovial-lined, fluid-filled sac located between a muscle and an underlying bone, joint capsule, or another muscle. Its primary function is to reduce friction and facilitate smooth movement of the muscle during contraction and joint motion.

These bursae allow muscles to glide freely over adjacent structures, particularly in regions where strong or repetitive movement occurs.

Examples
  • Subscapular bursa – between the subscapularis muscle and the neck of the scapula.

  • Iliopsoas bursa – between the iliopsoas muscle and the hip joint capsule.

Clinical relevance

Inflammation of a submuscular bursa, known as bursitis, can result from overuse, trauma, or infection, leading to pain and limited range of motion in the affected area.
