Superoposterior facet of greater trochanter
Facies superioris posterioris trochanteri majoris
Definition
The superoposterior facet of the greater trochanter is one of four recognized facets of the greater trochanter (anterior, lateral, posterior, and superoposterior). The superoposterior facet is situated on the upper and posterior aspect of the greater trochanter and serves as one of the primary insertion sites for the gluteus medius tendon, specifically for its thick posterior portion. This facet is generally circular in shape, with a mean diameter of approximately 17 mm, and is consistently identified in anatomical and imaging studies as a separate area from the lateral facet, which also receives part of the gluteus medius insertion.
