Tendon of abductor digiti minimi of foot

Tendo abductoris digiti minimi pedis

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The distal tendon of the abductor digiti minimi muscle of the foot is the terminal tendinous portion of the abductor digiti minimi muscle, which inserts onto the lateral side of the base of the proximal phalanx of the fifth toe. This tendon may also have attachments to the lateral aspect of the fifth metatarsal or blend with the lateral plantar aponeurosis, and variations in insertion are documented, including supernumerary fascicles or accessory slips. The abductor digiti minimi of foot muscle itself originates from the lateral and medial processes of the calcaneal tuberosity, the plantar aponeurosis, and the intermuscular septum, and its distal tendon provides abduction and slight flexion of the fifth digit.
