Definition

Muhammad A. Javaid

The thyroepiglottic part of thyroarytenoid muscle consists of the superior fibres of the muscle that ascend toward the aryepiglottic fold. These fibres extend to the lateral margin of the epiglottis and blend with fibers of the aryepiglottic muscle. Owing to their distinct course and function, they are often referred to as the thyroepiglotticus (or thyroepiglottic muscle) and are sometimes described as a separate muscle.

Actions

Functionally, the thyroepiglottic part widens the laryngeal inlet by drawing the epiglottis and aryepiglottic folds laterally, particularly during inspiration. In this role, it acts antagonistically to the aryepiglottic muscle, facilitating airway opening and ensuring unobstructed airflow during breathing.
