Anterior ciliary veins

Venae ciliares anteriores

Definition

Felipe Barona Lopez

The anterior ciliary veins pass through the scleral sulcus alongside the anterior ciliary arteries. Their role is to drain the venous plexus of sclera. Depending on the species, they then join the external ophthalmic veins, their muscular branches or the ophthalmic plexus. In pigs, they form a circular pericorneal plexus. In cats, there is a single large dorsally-placed anterior ciliary vein.
