Cochlea

Definition

Marjorie Champarou

The cochlea is a pyramidal excavation of the petrous part of the temporal bone. Its shape corresponds to a tube spirally wound (like a gastropod shell) around the modiolus, a conical bony axis. This tube is divided into two ramps (vestibular and tympanic) by the osseous spiral lamina.
