The cornea is the anterior part of the fibrous layer of eyeball, transparent and avascular. It is continuous with the sclera at the corneal limbus. It is more convex than the sclera. The corneal vertex corresponds to the anterior pole of the eyeball.

The anterior periphery of the cornea is round in carnivores and humans, while in ungulates it is oval with a narrowed lateral pole. Despite the anterior appearance, the posterior edge is almost always circular.
