Eye
Oculus
Definition
The eye is the organ of vision, located on the face. Located in the orbit, it consists of the eyeball (or globe) and the optic nerve, through which visual impulses reach the visual pathways and centers of the brain.
The eyeball is the essential organ of vision. It is bounded by a spheroid wall made up of three concentric layers: the fibrous layer (sclera, cornea), the vascular layer or uvea (choroidea, ciliary body, iris), and the inner layer (retina).
These three tunics enclose several cavities or refractive media: the chambers of eyeball and the lens.
The optic nerve is the sensory nerve of vision. It exits the eyeball and extends toward the optic chiasma.
This conformation of the eye is similar in humans.
