The ileocolic vein is a main tributary of the cranial mesenteric vein. It courses cranially and slightly to the right into the mesentery, accompanying cranial mesenteric artery, to join the cranial mesenteric vein.

It drains the terminal ileum, the cecum, the proximal ascending colon, including the colic ansa in some specie and the ileocecal fold region

It courses cranially and slightly to the right, accompanying its arterial counterpart, to join the cranial mesenteric vein. The point of junction is typically near the root of the mesentery, dorsal to the small intestine and ventral to the lumbar vertebral bodies.
