Synovial fluid

Synovia

Definition

The secretion of the synovial membrane is thick, viscid, and glairy, like the white of an egg, called synovial fluid (synovia)*.

Its principal role is to reduce friction between the articular cartilage of synovial joints during movement.

The synovial fluid is a small component of the transcellular fluid component of extracellular fluid.

*The term synovia from Greek συν- "with" and Latin ovum "egg" and -ia because it resembles egg white in consistency and external appearance.
