在筛骨复杂的建筑框架结构中，嵌居着筛骨中间小房，又称筛骨中间气房。这是一组约3个充气腔隙，构成筛骨迷路的重要组成部分。它们与前筛骨气房和后筛骨气房共同形成一个精密的筛骨气房网络，分布于鼻腔中线的两侧。
筛骨气房的解剖排列经过精密设计。它们在外侧由眶板所封闭——眶板是一层薄骨性结构，将气房与眼眶分隔开来。在内侧，筛骨迷路的内侧壁构成其与鼻腔之间的边界。这些气房被分为前、中、后三组，每组具有独特的位置及明确的引流途径。值得注意的是，中间筛骨气房（与前筛骨气房共同）在解剖结构上专门设计为向鼻腔的中鼻道引流。具体而言，筛骨中间小房向外膨出，形成一个隆起，称为筛泡。此结构显著地位于中鼻道内漏斗部——即半月裂孔——的上方。因此，这些气房的引流开口位于中鼻道内筛泡的表面。
