定义
脊髓侧角是指侧中间灰质（第七层）的侧方突出部分。它仅存在于胸段和上腰段脊髓节段（T1至L2），因此并不贯穿脊髓全长。
脊髓侧角内含一群神经元胞体，统称为中间外侧核，该核跨越T1至L2节段。这些神经元是节前交感传出纤维的起源，这些纤维向外投射至位于椎柱两侧的交感链神经节。在交感链内，节前纤维可直接在相邻神经节内形成突触，也可沿交感链上行或下行，在其上方或下方的神经节内形成突触，从而使交感传出得以到达颈部和盆部区域。
