脊髓的颈膨大是脊髓明显增宽的区域，以容纳支配上肢所需的大量神经。

位置：

颈膨大位于脊髓的颈段，具体位于C3至T2脊髓节段之间。该区域大致对应颈下部和胸上部。颈膨大在C5节段处达到最大宽度。

脊髓为何在此处膨大？

颈膨大的形成是因为该区域必须容纳脊髓灰质腹角和背角中更多的运动神经元和感觉神经元。这些神经元负责控制肩部、手臂和手部的肌肉（运动功能），并传递相应的感觉信息（感觉功能）。从颈膨大发出的脊神经参与构成臂丛，臂丛是负责支配上肢的神经网络。

与之类似的膨大——腰膨大（或腰骶膨大），位于脊髓下部，支配下肢，与腰丛相关联。
