岩大神经沟是一条骨性管道，位于三叉神经压迹和破裂孔的外侧。从此处起，它在颞骨岩部前面向后外侧延伸，终止于称为岩大神经裂孔（即面神经裂孔）的开口处。
岩大神经起自岩骨面神经管内，为面神经的一个分支。它经裂孔穿出后，沿其沟向内侧走行，到达破裂孔。在此处，它向下行与岩深神经汇合，共同形成翼管神经。岩大神经的解剖位置及其走行对于将副交感神经纤维传递至翼腭神经节至关重要，从而影响泪腺和鼻腺的分泌功能。
