Ala of vomer

Ala vomeris

Definition

Muhammad A. Javaid

The ala of vomer consists of two wing-like projections extending from the superior border of the vomer bone, separated by a deep furrow between them. These projections, or alae, are designed to align against the rostrum of the sphenoid bone and the sphenoid conchae positioned above. Beneath the alae, a vaginal process emanating from the medial pterygoid plate of the sphenoid bone is situated, giving rise to a vomerovaginal canal on both the right and left sides. Moving further downward, the sphenoidal process of the palatine bone is located underneath the vaginal process of the sphenoid bone, thereby creating the palatovaginal canal, also known as the pharyngeal canal.
