Sphenoidal concha
Concha sphenoidea
- Latin synonym: Concha sphenoidalis
- Synonym: Sphenoidal turbinate
- Eponym: Bertin's bone
Definition
The sphenoidal concha are the curved bony plates that project from both sides of the sphenoid crest and extend inferiorly and laterally to cover the sphenoidal sinuses. These plates contribute to forming the front wall and the floor of the sphenoidal air sinus. Right above the sphenoidal concha, within the upper front wall of the sphenoidal sinus, one can locate the sinus’s opening. Below, the sphenoidal concha articulates with the ala of the vomer bone. From the bottom view of a connected skull, these concha are not visible because they are hidden by the ala of the vomer bone.
