Definition
The hypoglossal communicating branch of first cervical nerve (C1) refers to the anatomical connection where the hypoglossal nerve (cranial nerve XII) receives fibers from the C1 spinal nerve. These C1 fibers then travel within the hypoglossal nerve to innervate specific muscles, namely the thyrohyoid and geniohyoid muscles.
