Description:

The innermost intercostal muscle are is thin layer of muscles located in the intercostal spaces, running parallel to the internal intercostal muscles. They extend from the inner surface of one rib to the inner surface of the adjacent rib below. These muscles are separated from the internal intercostal muscles by the intercostal vessels and nerves, which run in the neurovascular plane.

The innermost intercostal muscle forms a layer of intercostal muscles deep to the plane that contains the intercostal nerves and intercostal vessels and the internal intercostal muscles.
