Orbital region

Regio orbitalis

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The orbital region is defined as the anatomical area encompassing the bony orbit and its contents.

The orbit is a pyramidal cavity formed by seven bones, housing the globe (eyeball), extraocular muscles, optic nerve, lacrimal gland, orbital fat, arteries, veins, and peripheral nerves. The orbital region is bounded by four bony walls and is intimately related to the paranasal sinuses and cranial fossae, which allows for the potential spread of disease between these compartments. The region also includes the orbital apex, where neurovascular structures enter and exit the orbit, and is surrounded anteriorly by the orbital rim.
