Perimeniscal recesses

Recessi perimeniscalis

Definition

Antoine Micheau

Perimeniscal recesses are normal anatomic synovial spaces located at the peripheral margins of the menisci, particularly at the meniscocapsular junction where the meniscus attaches to the joint capsule. These recesses represent potential spaces within the knee joint where synovial fluid can accumulate and where displaced meniscal fragments may lodge following certain tear patterns.

The perimeniscal recesses are clinically significant because they can harbor displaced meniscal fragments following meniscal tears. When meniscal tears occur with partial detachment, fragments can migrate into these recesses, making them important to identify on MRI.
