Presacral space

Spatium presacralis

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The presacral space is a potential anatomical space located between the rectum and the sacrum.

The presacral space is bordered dorsally by the sacrum and coccyx, ventrally by the presacral fascia and peritoneum, laterally by the sacrosciatic ligament and transversalis fascia, superiorly by the peritoneal reflections and inferiorly by the levator ani and coccygeus muscles.

The presacral space contains a complex network of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. It is also a site where presacral tumors, which can be of germ cell, neuroblastic, mesenchymal, or osteogenic origin, may develop.
