  • Latin synonym: Bursa synovialis subfascialis

Definition

Muhammad A. Javaid

The subfascial bursa is anatomically located between the deep fascia and the underlying structures such as bone, tendon, or muscle. It typically lies deep to the fascial layer, at sites of high mechanical stress or friction.

Examples
  • The deep infrapatellar (subfascial) bursa is found posterior to the distal patellar tendon and anterior to the tibial tubercle, separated from the joint capsule by a fat pad and fascia.

  • Subfascial bursae may also be present beneath the fascia lata and gluteus maximus muscle at the greater trochanter.
