Superolateral extension of infrapatellar fat pad
Processus superiolateralis corpi adiposi infrapatellare
Definition
The superolateral extension of the infrapatellar fat pad refers to a distinct anatomical projection of the infrapatellar (Hoffa's) fat pad that extends superiorly and laterally, adjacent to the lateral border of the patella and beneath the lateral patellar retinaculum. This extension is present in a majority of knees and is typically smaller than the corresponding superomedial extension. It is attached anteriorly to the lateral patellar retinaculum and may play a role in patellofemoral biomechanics and pathology, particularly in cases of maltracking or impingement, where edema in this region is often observed on MRI.
