Suspensory ligament of axilla

Ligamentum suspensorium axillae

  • Eponym: Campbell's ligament; Gerdy's ligament

Definition

Muhammad A. Javaid

The suspensory ligament of axilla is an inferior, fibrous, band-like extension of the clavipectoral fascia. It originates from the lower border of the clavipectoral fascia and descends to blend with the axillary fascia, which forms the floor of the axilla. This structure is responsible for maintaining the characteristic concavity or hollow of the armpit by exerting traction on the axillary fascia and the overlying skin, particularly during arm abduction. This way, the suspensory ligament also plays a key role in supporting the axillary floor.
