Temporal surface of temporal bone
Facies temporalis ossis temporalis
- Related terms: Temporal surface; Temporal surface (Squamous part - Temporal bone)
Definition
The outer temporal surface of temporal bone is smooth and rounded, providing a place for the temporalis muscle to attach and forming part of the temporal fossa. Towards the back and up, there is a curved line called the supramastoid crest, continuing as the temporal line. This line marks the posterior boundary of the temporal surface of the squamous temporal bone and serves as an attachment point for the temporal fascia, where it limits the starting point of the Temporalis muscle. Towards the top, the temporal surface connects with the parietal bone along the upper edge of the squamous temporal bone. Towards the front, it connects with the greater wing of the sphenoid bone along the sphenoidal or front edge of the squamous temporal bone.
