Tendon sheath of tibialis anterior muscle
Vagina tendinis musculi tibialis anterioris
- Related terms: Tendinous sheath of tibialis anterior
Definition
The tendon sheath of the tibialis anterior muscle surrounds the tibialis anterior tendon. It extends from the upper margin of the transverse crural ligament to the interval between the diverging limbs of the cruciate ligament.
It consists of two distinct layers: an inner synovial sheath that is specific to each tendon and an outer common layer that ensheathes all the tendons within the extensor compartment of the leg. The outer layer is primarily nourished by septal perforators that form longitudinal vessels along the septum, providing vascular support to the sheath. This anatomical arrangement facilitates the smooth gliding of the tendon during movement and helps protect it from friction and mechanical stress
