The posterior layer of thoracolumbar fascia (Superficial layer of thoracolumbar fascia) is one of the three layers of the of thoracolumbar fascia in the lumbar region. It is attached to the spinous processes of the lumbar and sacral vertebrae and to the supraspinal ligament. The posterior layer of thoracolumbar fascia may be divided into a superficial and a deep lamina:

  • The superficial lamina of the posterior layer of the TLF (PLF) is dominated by the aponeuroses of the latissimus dorsi and the serratus posterior inferior this part being called the thoracolumbar aponeurosis.

  • The deeper lamina of the PLF forms an encapsulating retinacular sheath around the paraspinal muscles.
