Base of middle phalanx

Basis phalangis mediae

Definition

Estelle Demange

The base of the middle phalanx in animals is the proximal end of the middle phalanx bone, which articulates with the head of the proximal phalanx to form the proximal interphalangeal joint.

This region typically features an articular surface that allows for joint movement and may have anatomical landmarks for tendon attachment, such as fossae or ridges, depending on species and digit function.
