Biliary tract
Ductus biliares
Definition
The biliary tract (biliary system; biliary tree) refers to the network of ducts that transport bile from the liver to the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). This system includes:
Intrahepatic bile ducts (within the liver)
Extrahepatic bile ducts, including:
The hepatic ducts
The cystic duct (connecting to the gallbladder, when present)
The common bile duct (ductus choledochus)
Bile produced by hepatocytes drains through this system to aid in the digestion and absorption of fats. Notably, some species (e.g. horses and rats) lack a gallbladder.
