Alimentar canal

Canalis alimentarius

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The alimentary canal in domestic animals refers to the continuous tubular structure that extends from the mouth to the anus, through which food is ingested, digested, absorbed, and eliminated. It includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and ends at the anus.

This system is specialized in various species to accommodate differences in diet, such as the complex stomach in ruminants for fermentative digestion.
