Small intestine

Intestinum tenue

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The small intestine is the component of the gastrointestinal tract responsible for nutrient absorption and digestion, divided into three main sections: the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.

In dogs, the small intestine's histological structure includes layers such as the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, and serosa. The mucosa is the innermost layer and contains villi and crypts, which are essential for nutrient absorption. The thickness of these layers varies along the length of the small intestine, with the mucosa decreasing progressively from the proximal to the distal parts.
